About me

I’m Angela Rutherford, a design leader turned serial entrepreneur and financial strategist. For 15+ years I’ve fused editorial design leadership, hands‑on hospitality ventures, and data‑driven finance strategy—empowering brands to tell their story, accelerate growth, and create lasting value.

My background

Design Foundations

My career began in the heartbeat of digital media as Design Manager at The New York Times. There, I led a 22‑person design team, orchestrated cross‑functional projects, and honed the art of editorial precision. I earned the Publisher’s Award for operational excellence and learned how user‑centered design builds trust at massive scale.

Building Hospitality Ventures

Craving a hands‑on challenge, I turned vision into reality by founding The Royce Detroit (2015–2018). With a strong vision, I developed the business plan, secured financing, and ran every facet—from the guest experience and inventory forecasting to marketing—delivering a profitable launch and a 144% return on my investment.

That success fueled my next venture, Miracle Manor (2018–2021), where I conducted a thorough financial analysis, led acquisition due diligence, securing $1 million in financing to purchase a depressed property, and led a full renovation and market‑expansion strategy. The result: revenue doubled, occupancy rose 20%, costs fell 12%, and I exited at $1.35 million.

Strategic Finance & Advisory

These entrepreneurial wins sharpened my appetite for strategic finance. From 2021 to 2023, I partnered with startups and mid‑market firms, building financial models, evaluating acquisitions, and benchmarking performance to chart clear growth roadmaps.

Today, as a Finance Manager at Deloitte (2023–Present), I lead FP&A teams on a $90M portfolio—directing budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, KPI dashboard development, and risk assessments. I’ve built high‑impact reporting frameworks, mentored eight junior staff, and was selected for Deloitte’s STRIDE leadership program.

Education

Rooted in a Biology degree from the University of Michigan and an Executive MBA from the Quantic School of Business & Technology, I blend scientific rigor with design empathy and entrepreneurial grit—helping brands tell their story, optimize their finances, and scale with confidence.

Beyond the numbers

When I’m not architecting brands or dissecting balance sheets, you’ll find me kayaking on serene waters, chasing sunrises, or exploring hiking trails with my dog Sam. These passions fuel my creativity, remind me of the power of curiosity, and ground my approach to business: blending form with function, creativity with discipline.
